The Duchess of Cornwall, Catherine, is on her way to become a Style-Icon. The bridal dress was a modern replica of a Maria-Stuart styled dress with the Grace Kelly flair from 1956. The pale ivory colored silk gown was from the famed British designer Alexander McQueen, the same as Princess Diana. It was a beautiful ensemble of silk, lace and style. She decided on a much shorter train to suit the small silhouette and the simple sophistication of the dress. The diamond tiara was borrowed from the Queen’s collection. What could not be seen was the perfume but nevertheless noteworthy, “Creed Fleurissimo” the scent was created once for Grace Kelly.
The royal dresses have become amazing documents. Wearing something really striking was important up until the 19th century, when royal weddings were political. The royal brides dressed accordingly since they were part in the great game of international politics.Many of the gowns of the past have been recently undergone a major restoration and are only rarely to be seen on public display. There has been an exclusive showing of the historical dresses in lieu of the wedding of William and Catherine. The six royal wedding gowns on display in what was the apartment of the late Princess Margaret are up to 200 years old. The gowns bathed in dimmed lighting still glistening of the sheen of the fabrics and the interwoven silver threading.
The oldest in the collection belonged to Princess Charlotte and worn in 1816. This was the first royal wedding for which commemorative items were available. The gown needed the most restoration with up to 500 hours of detailed hand stitching. The cloth of silver gown of silk has an empire-line and embellished with lace and with small embroidered flowers.
Queen Victoria was already a queen when she married in 1840. She understood that marriage forged alliances. Her gown was of crinoline style court dress in white silk and became the aspiration of the wedding dress, which survives in pattern today.The lace with the detailed pattern of scrolling foliage and exotic flowers became the Queens most treasured piece. It was removed and added to other dresses time and time again.
The dress of the present Queen is also in ivory silk. Crystals and over 10,000 seed pearls cover the dress. The 13 foot long lace train was inspired by Botticelli and was to symbolize the nations rebirth after WWII. 13 years later, Princess Margaret wore the very first minimalistic as a stark contrast to her sisters.
Princess Diana’s gown not only had the longest train but also was made of six different fabrics. It has over 10,000 pearls and mother-of-pearls sewn onto by hand and shimmers beautifully. However, it is not part of the historical collection but on exhibition along with other Diana memorabilia. Not only do the British Royalty have majestic weeding gowns, Princess Leitizia of Spain wore a conservative but yet beautiful gown. Crown princess Victoria of Sweden wore a sophisticated dress with a long train witch was sewn onto the waist.
